Understanding Commercial Truck Physical Damage Valuation & Deductibles

Commercial Truck Physical Damage insurance protects your own tractor, box truck, car hauler, or trailer against covered Collision (rollover, impact) and Comprehensive (fire, theft, vandalism, glass, severe weather) losses.

Two policy elections determine how much you pay in premium and how a claim is settled: Valuation Method (Stated Amount vs. ACV) and Deductible Structure.

Stated Amount vs. Actual Cash Value (ACV)

Most commercial trucking physical damage policies settle total losses using the lesser of:

  1. Actual Cash Value (ACV) of the vehicle at the time of loss (market replacement value accounting for age, mileage, and condition);
  2. The Cost to Repair or Replace the damaged equipment with like kind and quality; or
  3. The Stated Amount scheduled on the policy declarations page.

Why Accurate Stated Values Matter:

  • Over-Insuring: Scheduling a tractor for $95,000 when its true market ACV is $65,000 means you pay higher premiums on $95,000, but a standard Stated Amount form will still cap a total-loss payout at the $65,000 ACV.
  • Under-Insuring: Scheduling a truck far below its true market value can cap your payout below replacement cost and may trigger coinsurance penalties on partial losses.

Choosing Your Deductible ($1,000 vs. $2,500 vs. $5,000)

Illustrative Pricing Standard: Premiums vary materially by state, authority age, driving history, equipment value, cargo, radius, limits and loss history. Any examples are illustrative rather than guaranteed pricing.

  • Lender & Leasing Company Rules: Equipment finance and lease contracts frequently require a maximum deductible of $1,000 or $2,500 and require the lender to be listed as Loss Payee.
  • Combined Single Deductible Endorsements: If a single crash damages your tractor, your trailer, and your motor truck cargo, ask whether the carrier offers a combined single deductible endorsement so you do not pay three separate deductibles on one event.

Does Physical Damage Cover Engine or Transmission Breakdown?

No. Physical damage covers sudden, accidental external perils such as collision, fire, theft, or weather—not wear-and-tear or mechanical/electrical breakdown.
