What the Washington, DC minimum means

25/50/10 means $25,000 of bodily injury coverage per person, $50,000 per accident and $10,000 for property damage. Washington, DC also requires: Uninsured motorist 25/50/5. A serious crash can easily cost more than the minimum, and you are personally responsible for the difference.

Comprehensive and collision

The state minimum does not repair your own car. Collision pays for crash damage to your vehicle and comprehensive pays for theft, hail, flood, fire and animal strikes. If your car is financed or leased, the lender almost always requires both.

SR-22 and high-risk drivers

If Washington, DC suspends your license, it may require proof of future financial responsibility, usually an SR-22 filed by your insurer. Your state notice says which form and for how long.
