Federal rules for interstate carriers

If you haul for hire across state lines, FMCSA requires at least $750,000 of liability for general freight in vehicles of 10,001 lbs or more, $1 million for oil and $5 million for most hazardous materials. Passenger carriers need $1.5 million (15 or fewer seats) or $5 million (16 or more). Your insurer files proof with FMCSA (BMC-91 or BMC-91X) and attaches the MCS-90 endorsement where required.

Operating only inside Louisiana

Louisiana is not on FMCSA’s list of states that require a USDOT number for intrastate-only carriers. Check with the state agency that registers your trucks for any state permits or limits.

Contracts with shippers and brokers often require $1 million liability and $100,000 cargo regardless of the legal minimum.

Coverages most businesses carry

Primary auto liability, motor truck cargo, physical damage (comprehensive and collision) for owned units, non-trucking liability for leased owner-operators, and hired and non-owned auto for businesses whose employees drive their own cars for work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a USDOT number in Louisiana?

Yes if you operate interstate commercial vehicles that require one. For intrastate-only operations, Louisiana is not on FMCSA’s list, but state registration rules still apply.

What is the minimum truck liability in Louisiana?

Interstate for-hire carriers of general freight need at least $750,000 under federal rules. Vehicles not subject to FMCSA must still meet the Louisiana auto minimum of 15/30/25.

Does a quote request bind coverage?

No. A request starts a review. Coverage is bound only after a carrier approves the application and payment is made.
