Federal rules for interstate carriers

If you haul for hire across state lines, FMCSA requires at least $750,000 of liability for general freight in vehicles of 10,001 lbs or more, $1 million for oil and $5 million for most hazardous materials. Passenger carriers need $1.5 million (15 or fewer seats) or $5 million (16 or more). Your insurer files proof with FMCSA (BMC-91 or BMC-91X) and attaches the MCS-90 endorsement where required.

Operating only inside Maryland

Maryland requires intrastate commercial vehicle registrants to obtain a USDOT number, according to FMCSA. State limits for intrastate carriers can differ from federal ones, so confirm with the state agency that registers your trucks.

Contracts with shippers and brokers often require $1 million liability and $100,000 cargo regardless of the legal minimum.

Coverages most businesses carry

Primary auto liability, motor truck cargo, physical damage (comprehensive and collision) for owned units, non-trucking liability for leased owner-operators, and hired and non-owned auto for businesses whose employees drive their own cars for work.
