Every driver in New York must meet the state’s legal minimum. Below are the New York requirements and what most drivers add for real protection.
25/50/10 means $25,000 of bodily injury coverage per person, $50,000 per accident and $10,000 for property damage. New York also requires: Personal injury protection $50,000; uninsured motorist 25/50. A serious crash can easily cost more than the minimum, and you are personally responsible for the difference.
The state minimum does not repair your own car. Collision pays for crash damage to your vehicle and comprehensive pays for theft, hail, flood, fire and animal strikes. If your car is financed or leased, the lender almost always requires both.
If New York suspends your license, it may require proof of future financial responsibility, usually an SR-22 filed by your insurer. Your state notice says which form and for how long.
