What the Virginia minimum means

50/100/25 means $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per person, $100,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage. A serious crash can easily cost more than the minimum, and you are personally responsible for the difference.

Comprehensive and collision

The state minimum does not repair your own car. Collision pays for crash damage to your vehicle and comprehensive pays for theft, hail, flood, fire and animal strikes. If your car is financed or leased, the lender almost always requires both.

SR-22 and high-risk drivers

If Virginia suspends your license, it may require proof of future financial responsibility, usually an SR-22 filed by your insurer or, for certain DUI cases, an FR-44 with higher limits. Your state notice says which form and for how long.
